What Is Metta, and why Metta for Monsters?
Metta is the Pali word for what is typically translated as lovingkindness practice, but it could also be called universal friendliness, or maybe just straight up belonging.
According to the Buddha, there are eleven benefits of practicing lovingkindness:
You will sleep easily.
You will wake easily.
You will have pleasant dreams.
People will love you.
Devas (gods or angels) and animals will love you.
Devas will protect you.
External dangers, such as poisons, weapons, and fire, will not harm you.
Your face will be radiant.
Your mind will be serene.
You will die unconfused.
You will be re-born in happy realms
Metta is quite literally an antidote for fear - this might be the fear we have for things outside us (and there are a lot of things to be afraid of in the world right now), and the fear we have of things inside us - the angry and unhealed parts of ourselves that we are afraid to even look at or acknowledge are there.
When we change our relationship with our internal monsters, what tends to happen is that we change how we relate to monsters out in the world as well - and by that I don’t mean that we let them walk all over us and others, but when we aren’t as reactive and afraid we can be more effective in how we meet them.
So this is your invitation: if you feel called to growing and stretching and exploring what’s possible, seeing if some or all of these benefits might be available to you, and what else Metta practice might transform in your life and in your heart, then click the link below to join us.
What to expect
Our time together will be an organic flow of teaching, guided meditations & group discussion.
There’s no official 'homework' between sessions, though you might like to get curious about your life outside the center - noticing what’s present with new knowledge and awareness.
Bring yourself and bring your curiosity!

THERE IS NO MONSTER INSIDE YOU
Fall in love with the darkness.
With the piss and the shit of life.
The shadows, the hidden parts.
The bits we hide out of shame.
Fall in love with the innocence.
Our childhood fears of the dark.
Of being exposed. Of showing ourselves,
being seen, coming into the light.
The doubts, the secret pains,
our strange fantasies, feelings we
just don’t know what to do with.
Terrors of the night-time.
The rage that bubbles just under the surface.
The fear that we are not loveable.
The feelings and thoughts we conceal
to maintain the image of ‘me’.
To be good, to be nice, to be spiritual.
To be ‘the one who can hold it all together’.
To be ‘the one who can hold it all together’.
Fall in love with this secret humanity.
Know that darkness is NOT darkness,
only scared fragments longing to come into the light,
beings who want love, and attention,
and breath, and inclusion in the larger picture of Self.
Do not seek the light, friend.
Simply be the light. Be what you are.
The light of life.
And have the courage to shine fully
on the sore places, the tender places.
Illuminate. Radiate.
Make it safe for the little monsters
to come out of hiding.
Let them know they are beautiful.
And worthy.
And not monsters at all.
